iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max Review: Apple offers the features we've been looking for for years.
The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max have the best camera and longest battery life of any iPhone we've tested.
Both cameras have a variety of high-end features, including B. Ability to record video in ProRes format, which is faithful to the Pro name.
Overall, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are excellent. Here is the original review first published in September.
The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max are the third consecutive year that Apple has released two Pro models.
The phone is the same price as last year's 12Pro and 12ProMax models, with an updated camera, a larger battery, and an A15 Bionic chip.
By adding features to the 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, many of us have long wanted.
For example, Apple's high refresh rate display further clarified the difference between professional and non-professional phones.
Three years ago, the word professional seemed more like a marketing term than an indication that the phone was more professional than the regular iPhone.
The 13 Pro is a big sign that there is no such thing as a universal iPhone. Unlike last year, both phones share the same camera package, only differing in size, battery life, and price.
The iPhone 13 Pro with 128GB of storage starts at $ 999 (Euro 949, A $ 1,699) and the 13 Pro Max starts at $ 1,099 (Euro 1,049, A $ 1,849).
For the first time, the iPhone has 1TB of storage. With additional storage, the price goes up to $ 1,499 (€ 1,449, AU $ 2,569) on the 13 Pro and $ 1,599 (€ 1,549, AU $ 2,719) on the 13 Pro Max. It's a lot of disk space and a lot of money.
The iPhone 13 Pro is more durable.
The phone has the same square appearance as the 12 series. The sides of the stainless steel are polished and the back is one of four matte finishes: graphite, gold, silver, or Sierra blue.
Under certain lighting conditions, the Sierra Blue iPhone will appear in light gray. From another point of view, it looks like UNC tar heel Carolina blue.
The neckline is 20% smaller. It's not that wide, but it still has a notch. It is no exaggeration to say that the 20% smaller notch is a concern.
Both phones are thick and heavy. The 13 Pro weighs 15 grams more, and the 13 Pro Max adds another 12 grams. I've found that using the 13 Pro adds weight.
Both phones have an Apple ceramic shield on the front, which is IP68 dustproof and water-resistant.
The ProMotion feature of the iPhone 13 Pro is amazing.
The 13 Pro has a 6.1-inch screen, and the 13 Pro Max has a 6.7-inch screen. The screen will be quite bright in everyday use.
The screen is equipped with a technology called Apple ProMotion. This means that the iPhone will support high frame rates for the first time.
The Refreshing rate varies between 10 and 120Hz, depending on things displayed on the screen. This is similar to Samsung's approach with the Galaxy S21 Ultra.
The screen in use looks great. The animations are smooth, the graphics are crisp, and even mundane things like scrolling channels look great.
The iPhone 13 Pro has a camera with a longer telephoto lens.
The main camera has the largest new sensor ever seen on the iPhone. It has a faster lens with an f1.5 aperture that allows it to capture light better.
The extra-long camera is equipped with a new autofocus sensor and a new lens to capture light better. Finally, the telephoto camera has a new sensor and lens with a longer 3x optical zoom.
The iPhone Pro brightened the photos, but the improvements weren't always noticeable. I also noticed that the shutter speed of the photo is fast, which makes it easier to freeze the action. B. When shooting a person on a bicycle.
Night mode photography is also fast and works with a 3x telephoto lens. The iPhone 11 and 12 series had a bug where the camera was reflecting the light source.
The 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max have this problem, especially if the photo has highlights, but it has been improved overall.
Get even closer with the iPhone 13 Pro's camera.
The 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max have a new macro mode that automatically engages a few inches away from your subject.
To test the camera and macro features, I took the iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 13 to the Field Festival, which is part of the annual Euphoria Food Event in Greenville, South Carolina. It was a delicious camera test.
The idea of ?? macro photography is that the camera automatically switches from wide-angle to ultra-wide-angle when you get close to the subject.
The ultra-wide-angle camera already has an autofocus function, so you can focus on subjects a few centimeters away. It turned out that macro photography using the iPhone was solid in bright and moderate light.
It's not comparable to a mirrorless camera with a dedicated macro lens, but it's one of the best macro modes I've seen on a cell phone.
I took close-up photos of food and coffee, and even the nightmares of ants crawling on abandoned grapefruit.
At the main dinner of the event, I learned two things. One is that gooseberries are delicious. Second, in the dark, the iPhone constantly switches from macro shots to ultra-wide-angle cameras.
The best cameras on mobile phones are wide-angle and work well in the dark. Also, the phone should be very close to the subject, block the light and provide an 18px close-up.
Currently, there is no way to disable the macro feature. According to Apple, a new setting will be added to the fall software update to disable macro close-ups and automatic video camera switching.
Video mode support for iPhone 13 Pro.
All iPhone 13 models have a new feature called "Video Mode". Record 1080p video at 30 frames per second using a rear camera or a true depth camera array.
The video is immersive because everything except the subject is blurry. With iPhone, you can focus from one subject to another.
The effect is spectacular and breathtaking. Similar to the portrait orientation of a photo, this feature allows you to adjust the depth of field.
The advantage of this is that the phone can take care of everything, including deciding who to focus on and when to switch.
While taking a picture, you can tap Focus and Aperture to make manual adjustments. Or you can do it all later. Is your cinema video perfect? No, but it's great to experiment.
A lot of light is needed for cinema mode to work optimally. If the condition is too dark, a pop-up will appear asking you to turn on the flash.
We also found it difficult to focus on fast-moving non-human objects such as tap water and flowing espresso in cinematic mode.
Also, when editing video in cinematic mode, the keyframe focus control is smaller. Press and hold to zoom in, and release to zoom in immediately.
Don't expect cinema mode to be the starting point for consistent quality video. This is a great feature, but in most cases, regular video is better.
The performance of the A15 Bionic is not the same.
All have Apple's new A15 Bionic chip. The GPU on the Pro model has five cores instead of the four cores on the 13 and 13 Mini models.
Testing the phone did not reveal any issues with games, photo editing, or opening multiple applications at once.
Of all the phones I've tested, the iPhone 13 Pro Max has the longest battery life.
Both the 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max have larger batteries. Whether it was a hot and humid day or a lot of photos and videos, it went on all day long.
In my opinion, the iPhone 13 Pro lasts for one day on a single charge, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max lasts for two days on a single charge. Both phones have longer battery life than last year's iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max.
In a battery test that played a loop video in airplane mode at half the screen brightness, the iPhone 13 Pro lasted 22 hours and 2 minutes, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max lasted 31 hours and 19 minutes. The iPhone 13 Pro Max lasted longer than any other phone.
Larger batteries aren't the only reason for better performance. Most of the improvements are LTPO displays that automatically adjust the refresh rate.
The refresh rate of the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max is constant, but the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max can reduce the refresh rate to 10Hz with less power.
I own all four iPhone 13 models for about five days, so I need to test a few more features before doing a proper review. Finally, let's sort out some questions.
IOS 15 on the 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max is excellent. We will add some features without changing the status quo. I love focus mode.
If you want to take a closer look at iOS 15, you can read the iOS 15 review. All iPhone 13 models have a default style, a default iPhone looks, and a new photo style mode with four styles to choose from Vivid, High Contrast, Warm, and Cool.
According to Apple, these styles are more than just filters. The phone analyzes different parts of the subject and, for example, provides the desired look without making the human skin too orange.
Apple does all this when you take a picture and embed it in a file. These phones will be the first phones to support Apple's ProRes video codec.
ProRes is especially useful for optimizing video files, using colors, and using editing software such as Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere Pro.
ProRes video files aren't very compressed, but they use a lot of storage space and require 1TB of storage space.
Unfortunately, the ProRes format isn't available yet, but it will be available later this year.
